Uber says it is investigating a “cybersecurity incident” amid reports that the company’s internal systems were breached.
The alleged hacker, who claims to be an 18-year-old, says they have administrator access to company tools including Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud Platform.
The Verge cites a report from The New York Times that says the travel business has taken multiple internal systems offline, including Slack, while it investigates the breach, the Telegraph reports.
When The Verge reached out to Uber for comment on the case, a spokesperson for the company declined to answer additional questions, saying that their statement on Twitter should be read.
“We are currently responding to a cyber security incident. We are in contact with law enforcement and will post additional updates as they become available,” their statement read.
The hacker apparently made himself known to Uber workers by posting a message on the company’s internal Slack system.
“I declare that I am a hacker and that Uber has suffered a data breach”, it is written in the “screenshots” of the message which are circulating on Twitter.

The hacker then posted a list of internal company information they say they accessed, and posted a hashtag that says Uber offers low wages to its workers.
The Slack message from the hacker in question was so brazen that many Uber workers apparently thought it was a joke at first.
Workers’ reactions included light hearted emojis such as sirens and popcorn, as well as “it’s happening” GIFs.
An anonymous Uber employee told Yuga Labs engineer Sam Curry that staff interacted with the hacker thinking what was happening was a joke. / Weather.al /
